U.S. and European justice officials say they've shut down two leading underground websites, selling illegal drugs, weapons, child pornography and other criminal items on the so-called dark web. Announcing the closure of AlphaBay, the U.S. Attorney-General said it showed that the shadowy dark web offered no protection to websites that anonymously serve hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide.
The row between Turkey and Germany over the arrest by Ankara of human rights activists is continuing to escalate. The Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, has condemned as unacceptable remarks by his German counterpart that Turkey is not a safe place to visit or to do business.
The disgraced former American footballer and actor, O.J. Simpson, has been granted parole and will be released from prison, probably in October. He's served almost the minimum nine years, to which he was sentenced for the armed robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers in Las Vegas in 2008.
A general strike in Venezuela, called by the opposition, seemed to have been partially observed with many streets in Caracas appearing largely deserted, although security forces have been reported firing teargas at hooly protesters.
The President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, has called on the Polish President to stop legislation that paves the way for the removal and replacement of all the country's supreme court judges. Mr. Tusk said the move risked marginalizing Poland.
The body of the surrealist painter, Salvador Dali, is being exhumed from his crypt in northeastern Spain, so that samples of his DNA can be taken to try to settle a paternity suit. It follows a court ruling in favor of Maria Pilar Abel Martínez, who claims to be his daughter.
And the lead singer of the American rock group, Linkin Park, has died in an apparent suicide. The Coroner's Office in Los Angeles said Chester Bennington had been dead at his home in the city. He'd struggled with drug and alcohol addictions.
