Euro Campaign

ANCHOR
More now on Sweden’s rejection of the single currency. 56% of the country’s electorate voted to keep the Kronor against the wishes of their own government and business leaders. And the vote comes three years after Denmark also voted against the Euro.
The decision doesn’t bode well for Euro campaigners in Britain.

CORRESPONDENT
Jubilation in the “No” camp as Swedes join fellow Scandinavians, the Danes, to vote against. Now Britons are unlikely to get the chance to vote before 2006. The U.K. government is in principle pro Euro, but this is seen as effectively banishing PM Tony Blair’s chances of calling a successful ballot on the issue until when and if he wins the next election.

ADAM AFRIYIE, U.K. BUSINESS FOR STERLING
Basically, the whole apparatus of Sweden was behind getting into the Euro. Now, what this show is even though public opinion was very evenly balanced coming up to the vote, actually they’ve got an enormous bloody nose there. So whether or not other prime ministers, whether or not our prime minister here in Britain will risk joining the Euro under those circumstances or risk calling a referendum under those circumstances, I think has been put in doubt.

CORRESPONDENT
Like their Swedish counterparts, British officials cite their country’s superior economic growth compared to the Euro zones, but experts claim that’s deceptive short-termism.

KATINKA BARYSCH, CENTER FOR EUROPEAN REFORM
Obviously, the decision whether to give up your currency is a long term one, potentially forever. Now looking at current growth rates, it’s very misleading, because the reason why the Euro zone growth is so low is mainly because of Germany. Germany’s got its own problems that have little do with the Euro.

CORRESPONDENT
Economists cite inflexible labor markets and still the after effects of reuniting East and West Germany in 1990. Neither of those in particular is a problem here in Britain. Nonetheless, there are plenty of people, financial professionals, bus drivers, you name it, who question the wisdom of the Bank of England ceding control of interest rates to Frankfurt.

MIKE SMITH HALVORSEN, CORPORATE FX
I think it shows a lack of control and a lack of confidence in general terms in the ECB’s management of Euro policy.

CORRESPONDENT
The British public has a history of Euro skepticism going back decades.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE
I think if another country feels that they can stay out of it for longer and survive economically, then I think it’s sending a signal to us that we’re not going to do ourselves any damage by doing the same thing.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE
They’ve obviously thought it through very carefully, they’ve come to a decision, the decision is “No”. I think that will make people in this country think twice as well.

CORRESPONDENT
Sweden’s “No” vote isn’t binding . The government there could in any case abandon the Kronor in favor of the Euro. Though one “Yes” is enough to join, one “No” is far from enough to kill the issue. And like in Denmark and Britain, talk will inevitably soon come round to when the next referendum will be.

ANCHOR
Well, Britain’s official line is that a referendum is still not ruled out within the lifetime of the current party, when it’s even after the Swedish rejection.

Corporate FX
