ANCHOR
And now to Wall Street where the New York Stock Exchange has appointed an interim chief executive officer and chairman. John Reed is former chairman and co-chief executive of Citigroup. Chris Huntington reports.
CORRESPONDENT
The New York Stock Exchange is banking on former Citicorp chairman John Reed to rebuild the Big Board’s image and front office following Dick Grasso’s less than graceful departure.
CARL MCCALL, LEAD DIRECTOR NYSE
John is a real statesman, he has been a leader of the financial industry, and he will be leading our effort as we continue to develop a corporate governance plan for the New York Stock Exchange.
JOHN REED
This is John speaking, how may I help you?
CORRESPONDENT
Reed has impeccable credentials on Wall Street where he ran Citicorp then Citigroup with Sandy Weil until retiring three years ago. Reed was the only person offered the interim post at the Exchange, for which he will be paid one dollar. He says he hopes to have a permanent chairman in place within six months and that it definitely will not be him.
Reed’s first job will be to restore the Big Board’s status on Wall Street.
