The Dow Jones Industrial Average indeed fell sharply after the attacks, but staged a recovery into the spring of 2002 and is now less than 2% lower than it was 2 years ago. The Nasdaq is actually now trading 7.5% above where it was prior to the attacks. I asked Benedict Lawson, investment adviser at Seven Investment Management, whether financial markets are in any sense still suffering from the impact of the September 11 attacks.

BENEDICT LAWSON, SEVEN INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT
I think certainly from an emotional point of view, I mean, 9/11 is going to stay with us and is going to stay particularly with America, the U.S., for a very, very long time to come. But I think that as far as the financial markets are concerned , that, I’m afraid, is history.
The bigger problems now are all about the hangover from the technology boom that we saw over the last six years, and the subsequent bust. And really the big questions this week have not been about 9/11, they’ve been about the economy, they’ve been about the jobs figures, the sentiment figures, the retail sales figures and those are the things that are pushing the market, this week, I’m sure.

Ok, so how do you read those? Because some people are saying that this market is poised, it could actually go down, that we could throw away some of the gains we’ve seen in that decent rally.

BENEDICT LAWSON, SEVEN INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT
Well, we certainly have had a decent rally and whether you’re talking about U.S. markets or U.K. markets, what rally there has been has certainly run out of steam this week, with certainly in the U.K. four consecutive down days. Albeit I have to stress that it was not exactly a huge week. The U.K. market was down about half a percent this week. Obviously U.S. markets still trading. However, that said, I think that the market has become extremely sensitive or will increasingly become sensitive to these economic issues, to the data that’s coming out. Bearing in mind, of course, the market is desperately trying to see a pickup to justify the slightly stretched multiples that we’ve seen coming through recently.
If the economic scenario does not suggest that’s going to happen, it wouldn’t surprise me to see some of the rally given up, but I’m not suggesting I don’t want to be a doom and gloom merchant, I don’t think we’re going to fall back a long way. But, I think that investors, as we’ve seen today in the U.S. the pickup in bond prices, are quite prepared to take some of those gains off the table and put them back into the bond markets.

是的，不论是美国还是英国市场，我们都有一个不错的回升。但英国市场本周确实有些后劲不足了，已连续四天下跌。即使我强调那一周的下跌幅度不是很大，英国市场本周下跌了0.5个百分点。很明显美国市场仍在进行交易，但是我要说的是，对于这些经济问题，对于即将出现的数据，市场已经变得极其敏感，或者说会变得愈加敏感。一定要牢记，市场极力希望看到增长了的数据，以使我们近来有些不稳定的市盈率有一些调整。

如果经济远景规划没有预见到这一点，那么如果看到一些上升的机会被放弃，我是不会感到惊讶的。但我并不过分悲观。我认为我们不会后退很远。但我认为正如我们从今天上升美国债券价格中所知的，投资者可能准备把他们在股市上的所得拿去，重新放到债券市场上。
