BSKYB has named Rupert Murdoch's son James Murdoch as its new chief executive. And that sets the scene for a confrontation amongst shareholders. Investors are concerned that the appointment will hand too much control to the media group News Corp, which is chaired, of course, by Rupert Murdoch, and which controls 35 percent of BSKYB. Paula Hancox now takes a look at whether the company can cope with another Murdoch at the helm.

A college dropout just eight years ago, James Murdoch has transformed himself from the black sheep of the family to the youngest chief executive in Britain's FTSE 100 Index. Some shareholders have been asking if he is fit to run BSKYB because of his resume or because of his last name.

James Murdoch will really have to prove himself, and that window of opportunity is only really going to be about 6 months to a year in length. So, if by the end of the first year he hasn't won his management team over and demonstrated to shareholders that he can continue to deliver some track record of results, then effectively he'll have lost the battle.

Looking at James' curriculum vitae, or employment history, he set up a hip-hop record label in 1995, which was then bought out by his father's company. A promotion to head of News Corp's music division. Next, taking charge of News Corp's internet operations. But James' career-making move was as chief of News Corp's Asian satellite service Star TV, taking it from losing $170 million a year into the black.
The News Corp media empire is no stranger to seeing Murdoch children at the helm. Lockland Murdoch has long been considered favorite to head the family business when and if his father steps down. Promoting James to head of BSKYB could put that in jeopardy.

What he's doing, and he makes no bones about this, is he's playing the two of them off against each other. And there's something slightly kind of unseemly about, you know, creating a sort of an arch rivalry between two of your offspring both because it seems unhealthy but also I'm not sure if that's sort of a very good way of running things.
