U.S. Economy Recovered in 2003

ANCHOR
The U.S. markets have had a strong run this year. The Dow1 has jumped nearly a quarter in value, and the NASDAQ2 has recovered some 47 percent. That's largely thanks to impressive economic growth. But is the kind of growth we've seen so far this year sustainable? Maggie Lake in New York now takes a look at how the economy is likely to shape up in the new year.

CORRESPONDENT
After coasting along a modest growth path for the last couple of years, the U.S. economy has finally shifted into high gear. Factory production in November surged to its fastest pace in 20 years. Businesses have started spending on equipment and technology once again. And consumers remain out in force. The economic growth has been so strong, in fact, that most analysts say it is not sustainable. But they do believe the groundwork3 is laid for a prosperous 2004.

MICHAEL DECKER, BOND MARKET ASSOCIATION
You've got all the stars aligned4: very stimulative fiscal policy, accommodative5 monetary policy, big growth in business spending, solid stock market, good corporate profits, weak dollar. All that points to a solid year for growth.

CORRESPONDENT
Optimists are forecasting U.S. economic growth in excess of five and a half percent next year. As one of the largest economies in the world, that type of U.S. growth would help other countries recover.

NICK SARGEN, ANALYST
I look at other parts of the world. The Japanese economy now stabilizing and even beginning to turn up. That's definitely the fact they're benefiting from the ability to export into the U.S. and into the rest of Asia. And even Europe, which has been the lagger, the recent indications are somewhat encouraging.

CORRESPONDENT
A coordinated global recovery would help stock markets, which surged higher in 2003, continue their bull6 run.
But economists warn there are risks to the rosy7 forecast. The U.S. must borrow trillions of dollars to finance its twin budget and trade deficits. Many analysts would like a return to fiscal restraint and balanced budgets.
Energy prices remain stubbornly high, and terrorism remains a grave threat and one of the few clouds in an otherwise bright economic outlook8. Maggie Lake, CNN, New York.
