Now many businesses have been feeling the brunt of the baking heat. European farmers are preparing for their worst crisis in decades as the heat parches their crops. On the other hand though, winemakers are preparing for their best harvest in years. Paula Hancocks has that story.

An Italian dream of years gone by, 50 years to be exact, the last time wine makers were this excited about their harvest.

This heat wave has been an extraordinary one, the grape has grown into a very sweet one, a very small one, and in a land rich of minerals and salts, the harvest wine of this year will be a very special one.

And an imminent one. These chardonnay grapes will be harvested up to two weeks earlier than normal. Grapes ripening ahead of schedule have a higher sugar count. The sweeter the grape the more distinct the aromas and bouquets. But the fruit could still fall foul of nature.

Light rain is welcome, more than that could rot the early ripened grapes. But for now the experts are dreaming of another 1947, a year that created some exquisite wines. So for Europe’s winemakers the heatwave this summer has been perfect. And even though these sorts of temperatures we have been seeing do mean fewer grapes, which translates into fewer bottles to sell, the mentality, even among some of the larger wine producers, is changing from quantity to quality.
Scarce quantitiy but fine quality guarantee winemakers bigger bucks for their bouquet. Like pizza and pasta, Italians take their wine very seriously, it is far more than just a drink.
