The main character is called Drew Baylor. He was fired from his company and dumped by his girlfriend. When he wanted to end his life, he received a phone call from his sister saying that his father died. So he had to return to his father’s hometown, Elizabethtown, in Kentucky, to attend the funeral.

On the plane to Elizebethtown, he met Claire Colburn, a hostess who later helped him get through the most desperate period of his life.

As somebody once said there's a difference between a failure and a fiasco.

A failure is simply the non-presence of success. Any fool can accomplish failure. But a fiasco...A fiasco is a disaster of mythic proportions.

A fiasco is a folktale told to others that makes other people feel more alive because it didn't happened to them.

So what’s the major difference between a failure and a fiasco to Drew? It’s about Other People--how others see his failure.

He thinks that if his failure is a folktale which would be laughed at by other people, it becomes a fiasco.

I’m Fine. I’m Fine."

He’s Fine."

You made me lost a major American shoe company...It’s so big, well, you could round it off to one billion dollars. And by tomorrow afternoon, the whole world, everyone will know. Something is going to be published on the Global Business.

Drew,

When Drew came back to his father’s hometown Elizebethtown, everyone there is very proud of him, telling him that they know well about the famous shoe that he designed years ago.

They know that Drew is working at a big company in a big city in California, and designs shoes for people around the world. That’s really incredible.

Claire: What they say is that it will hit you. Could be ten minutes or ten years from now.

Drew: I've always wondered something... who are "they"?

Claire: You know... "Them"

Drew: Them?

他们?

Claire: The inimitable collective, "them".

Drew: And who says we have to listen to "them"?

Claire: "THEY" do!

Claire: So, you failed.

Drew: No, you don't get it.

It’s a billion! That’s a lot of millions!”

All right, you really failed. You failed, you failed, you failed. You failed, you failed, you... You think I care about that? I do understand. You're an artist, man.

Your job is to break through barriers. Not accept blame and bow and say: "Thank you, I'm a loser, I'll go away now." "Phil's mean to me..." So what?

Claire: You want to be really great? Then have the courage to fail big and stick around. Make them wonder why you're still smiling. That's true greatness to me.

So Clair suggested Drew to take on a road trip. She says that "everyone’s got to take a road trip, at least once in their lives. Just you and some music."

Don’t skip any song.

Some music needs air. Roll down your window.

You have five minutes to wallow in the delicious misery. Enjoy it, embrace it, discard it. And proceed.

No true fiasco ever began as a quest for mere adequacy.

A motto of the British Special Service Air Force is: "Those who risk, win."

The Pacific Northwestern salmon beats itself bloody on it's quest to travel hundreds of miles upstream against the current, with a single purpose, sex of course, but also... life.

就像Drew父亲常说的“It wasn’t this, it would be something else. ”
