The movie is based on a true story, though its ending has been revised.

It follows An Ran, an 18-year-old girl who lost her parents due to a car accident, and is now facing the dilemma of pursuing her dream and independent life or raising her six-year-old younger brother.

In the 1993 American movie, Gilbert Grape is a young man who needs to take care of his whole family, including her mother, who has been morbidly obese since the suicide of his husband, and his younger brother, who is developmentally disabled, whose doctor even says he will die before 18.

Though Gilbert cannot choose his life, he loves his family members deeply, so he later chooses to take the responsibility of taking care of his brother on his own, after his mother died.

Well, since An Ran was very young, she was unfairly treated by her parents due to their preference for boys over girls.

She had to pretend to be disabled in order to allow her parents to get the certificate to have a second child, preferably a son.

Under China’s One Child Policy at that time, parents with a disabled kid were allowed to have a second child.

Later after An Ran grew up and was able to apply for a medical school in Beijing, her parents revised her application behind her back and forced her to stay in her hometown to take good care of her family.

China's preference for sons stretches back for centuries.

According to a report from the Guardian, in the early 1980s, there were 108 male births to every 100 female, only slightly above the natural rate.

By 2000 that had soared to 120 males, and in some provinces, such as Anhui, Jiangxi and Shaanxi, to more than 130.

The result means more than 35 million women are "missing."

Though the preference for boys is decreasing in China, especially in the more affluent areas, it’s undeniable that such phenomenon still can be seen in many regions.

Yang Yang is a fertility doctor with the Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital. He says in an article on Sixth Tone that some parents are requesting illegal sex screening.

Sixth Tone

He recalls that one half of the couple — usually the man — will lower his voice and ask if sex screening is possible from a technological perspective.

When he replied that “yes, it is possible, but only when at least one of the parents is carrying a hereditary [həˈredɪteri] disease.”

The father will clear his throat and murmur, “Money’s not an object. Can you just help us have a boy?”

They may later arrange illegal screenings and terminate their pregnancies at unlawful clinics.

Some women have even been pregnant five or six times, yet have given birth only once and do not have a history of natural miscarriage.

By 2018, there were still over 31 million more men than women in the country.

If we don’t overhaul our society’s overall preference for sons, then it will be impossible for us to escape China’s current population trap.

Dr. Yang Yang says, "we must shake off our harmful social preference for boys — because no more little girls should ever disappear, and no more little boys should have to grow old alone."

她或许早就读上了医学院,也不会抵触弟弟;

如果姑妈没有从小被灌输要照顾弟弟,凡事以弟弟为先,她的人生也不至于那么糟糕;
