New Learning Experience

It’s not exactly paint by numbers; these mountain screensavers at the London School of Economics are created daily by a computer, but the parameters are generated by the daily gyrations of London’s top 100 stocks.

The LSE is revamping its entire learning experience by introducing more art to its campus, and also using art to change the way students interpret their studies. The school wants students to see that data and therefore economics in a different light, not just the old frame of making money.

Artist Matthew Cornford notes that mountains play a large part in advertising, in fantasy novels, and in the world of finance, the peaks and troughs of the market and all that. Art is usually discussed when it’s finished, but the permutation of this work is not in the control of the artist. And the impact won’t be clear until the project finishes in a year.
