Toyota is shifting gears in its eco-friendly push, putting its hybrid Prius sedan on the mass marketing highway. The gasoline-electric car has been popular in limited release with the environment concerned and also Hollywood consumers. But sales were a modest 150,000 since launching in 1997. The world’s No. 3 automaker now wants to more than double sales of its upgraded Prius, which has an electric motor but does not need to be plugged in for recharging. The sedan has extras, such as an intelligent parking system that uses power steering and sensors to guide it when reversing to park.

The Prius is priced at about 20,000 dollars and will likely be the first in what may be many eco-cars on the horizon. Its mileage per liter is almost twice as much as the average car on the highway today.

The car’s chief engineer says Toyota has improved emission efficiency and performance at the same time.

Until now on one liter of gas the car could go 31 kilometers. But with the new modifications to the car, it’s up to 35.5 kilometers. That’s an improvement of 15%.

Acceleration of the Prius, which had been seen as a weakness, is now comparable to Toyota’s Camry. Analysts say rather than looking for an eco-chic gimmick, Toyota has its eyes set on making a profit with a complete automobile.

I think we’re going to see a proliferation of ideas as we try and improve fuel economy. And the new way I think is...you’re starting to integrate hybrids into mass-market cars as opposed to producing special cars with hybrid systems.

Sanger expects current sales targets to be easily met, and production may rise to 300,000 annually within two years. Toyota and Honda are the only carmakers selling hybrid vehicles currently. But GM and Ford will soon launch their own models as the market expands to include SUVs. Estimates are that 1 in 20 cars sold in the U.S. in ten years will be a hybrid, while adding potential incentive, the IRS, which approved tax breaks for Prius owners of $2,000 due to its green car design.
