Japan’s auto giant, Honda Motor, is said to report its third straight year of record profits helped by surging sales in its overseas markets. And it’s time for a new chief executive to rev revenues up further. But as Reuters correspondent Dan Sloan reports, while Honda may be rolling ahead in the U.S. and China, it appears to be in reverse at home.

Japan’s No. 2 automaker Honda Motor has a new CEO, who already is busy promoting one of the world’s most successful names. Takeo Fukui, a 33-year company veteran, was tapped to head the firm this spring. Fukui, an engineer and sportsman, who avidly follows the company’s racing teams, says even with record profits, rising overseas market share and a stock at year highs, Honda’s engines can rev even faster.

The company expects sales this year to equal or exceed 2002 levels with the U.S. market producing 70% of profits over the last two years. Fukui says even with aggressive incentive plans by Detroit’s Big Three and a stronger yen compared to last year, Honda has hope, expanding market share on the back of firm SUV sales. Analysts say while other firms have struggled Honda has had a solid quarter.
