From NPR news in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh.[qh]
[qh]
Hurricane Issac is lumbering to world New Orleans in the gulf coast, where it is expected to make landfall by early tomorrow, the seventh anniversary of hurricane Katrina. Some people are evacuating, others such as Georgina Moor are placing their faith in the levees reinforced after Katrina.[qh]
[qh]
I think it's a test of the city. And although wonderful things we could emplace that they tell us are working and we know no doubt, but we believe it right now, we wouldn't be here. But Donald Ray who has traveled all the way from the UK to vacation in the crescent city is getting more than he bargained for.[qh]
[qh]
What a little comprehensive, we have never seen anything like this before. so we don't know what expects. We have just been out shopping, we got groceries in and, stores of how to say, we just don't know what to expect.[qh]
[qh]
Although it is now at minimal hurricane strength Issac does not have the intense winds that Katrina did but NPR's Craig Windham reports the slow moving storm could cause major water damage.[qh]
[qh]
The head of national hurricane center Rick Knabb says Issac's drenching rains are likely to cause widespread river flooding and the storm could slam coastal areas in Louisiana and Mississippi with significant surge of sea water. "We could see storm surge of 6 to 12 feet above ground level. That is why some folks have been told to evacuate." And President Obama is urging people in vulnerable areas to hit those evacuation orders and not tempt fate by trying to ride out the storm. "Now it is not the time to dismiss official warnings you need to take them seriously." Mr Obama says the federal emergency management agency has deployed supplies and response teams in all of the gulf coast states. Craig Windham, NPR news Washington.[qh]
[qh]
The hurricane may temper the mood to bid of the republican national convention in Tampa but republicans run the last anticipating of 4-night big speeches. The soon to be presidential nominee Mitt Romney arrived early in Tampa before his wife's speech tonight. NPR's Ari Shapiro reports Mr Romney spent most of the afternoon preparing for his own speech which he will deliver two days from now.[qh]
[qh]
To the Romney campaign, the big Thursday night's speech is not about hitting the reset button, instead, campaign advisor Steward Stevens says it will be a continuation of the arguments Romney has been making since he first announced his run for president. Steven spoke to reporters on the flight to Tampa. "I mean...call a ..between the speech city gave in New Hampshire and that filled over a year ago to this speech. Very much through threat, a visitor for America, a different, more positive for America, how things can improve." Steven tries to downplay expectations that Romney will get a bounce in polls from the convention. He said hurricane Issac and the back-to-back convention scheduling means all bids are off. Ari Shapiro NPR news in Tampa.[qh]
[qh]
President Obama meanwhile appears to young voters in stops in universities in Iowa, Colorado and Virginia. This is NPR news.[qh]
