From NPR News in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh.

The Republican-led House has just voted to repeal the affordable health care act, President obama's signature domesticlegislation. But the vote is wildly considered as symbolic. NPR's Andrew Seabrook reports the GOP wants to make a point, even though the law was recently upheld by the US Supreme Court.

It's important to member of that, the House of Representatives is controlled by Republicans and the Senate is controlled by Democrats right now. So the House of Representatives becomes the place where Republicans can show the kinds of policies that they are interested in enacting, including a completerepealof the affordable care act. But the reality of it is that isn't much more than a show, a show vote as they called it here. NPR's Andrew Seabrook covering house action on the health care law, Republicans are calling Obamacare. Mitt Romney, the Republican's presumptive presidential nominee encountered a tough audience in Houston today when he brought up Obamacare before members of the Civil Rights organization, NAACP.

If our goal is jobs, we have to stop spending over a trillion dollars more than we take in every year. And so to do that, I'm going to eliminate every non-essential expensive program I can find that includes Obamacare, and I'm going to work to reform and save.

Romney addressing the annual gathering of the NAACP earlier today, but he did drop clauses as he spoke a faith and noted various challenges confronting the African-American community including an unemployment rate that is much higher than the national average.

Federal Reserve officials appeal ready to take more action to support growth if the economy losesmomentum.

That's according to minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting released today. And NPR's John Ydstie has the details.

The minutes actually showed several members of the policy-making committee thought it was likely the fed would have to take more action, while others said it would only be warranted if the recovery slowed and inflation dropped. Since the meeting in June, there have been signs of a further growth slowdown including a disappointing employment report this past Friday. That's led many economist to believe the fed will embark on a third round of quantitative easing or QE3 in which money is injected into the economy by the fed's purchase of bonds. The tone of the June meeting and thesubsequenteconomic data suggest the possibility of QE3 has increased. John Ydstie,NPR News, Washington.

Before the close on Wall Street, Dow JonesIndustrialAverage down 49 points at 12,605 in trading of just over three billion shares; NASDAQ down nearly 0.5% at 2,888; and the S&P 500 down slightly at 1,341.
