1.continue v．继续：接着说
【例】We know that more than 850,000 children go through hospital each year,and that every child of school age hasa legal right to continue to rc:ceive education while in hospital.
我们知道每年有超过85万的孩子进入医院，而那些学龄儿童在住院期间也有继续受教育的合法权利。( 1999)
【用】continue to do和continue doing都有“继续做某事”的意思，它们的差别在于前者指中断后继续做另一件事，后者指一卜断后继续做同一件事。
【派】continuity(n．连贯性，连续性，持续性)；continuous( adj.持续的，不问断的，连续的)；continual（adj.多次重复的，频繁的；持续的，不问断的）

【例】They show either a lack of enthusiasm or an excess ofit．
他们表现得不是缺乏热情就是过度热情。( 2004)
I am burdened with the excess of parents' expectation.
父母的过度期望使我感到负担很重。
【用】搭配in excess of表示“大于；多于”。

4.fastidious adj.吹毛求疵的，爱挑剔的，难以取悦的

【记】联想记忆：fast(绝食)+idious（=tedious，乏味的）--因乏味而绝食一挑剔的
【例】Alice is so j'astidious about her food that I never invite her for dinner.
艾丽丝对食物过于挑剔，因此我从不请她吃饭。
【用】“对…很挑剔”可以用词组be fastidious about来表示。

5.thrash v.打（谷物）,脱谷；鞭打，痛打，击败;猛烈舞（挥）动

【例】They were thrashed in the baseball game last night.

6.outdated adj.过时的，陈旧的

【例】It is difficult to run a business with outderted equipment.

7.elaborate adj.精心制作的；详尽阐述的；复杂的；精致的 v．详尽阐述，发挥

【记】联想记忆：e(出)+labor(劳动，工作)+ate(…的)--辛苦劳动做出来--精心制作的
【例】They hope all the elabonUe plans come tofruition.
他们希望所有这些详尽的计划都能付诸实现。

8.falter v.蹒跚，踉跄；犹豫，动摇;结巴地说，支吾而语

【例】The popularity of 4x4 cars is set tofalter in 2007.according to a global car industry survey.
