Imagine you want to talk about the things you like, or the classes you are taking or the activities you did during the day.

In other words, you want to talk about a series of things.

In this situation, Americans often use intonation in a special way.

Intonation refers to the rising or falling of the voice.

Imagine you hear a person talk about the sports that they like: I like basketball, football, baseball and swimming.

I like basketball, football, baseball and swimming.

Did you notice the changes in my voice?

Listen again. I like basketball, football, baseball and swimming.

My intonation rose during each of the first few nouns and fell during the last noun, swimming.

This movement of the voice tells the listener that you have finished with your sentence.

Now imagine you want to describe the classes you are taking.

You might say: This year I'm taking math, physics, English and history.

Once again, my intonation rose to show I was going to continue talking and then my intonation fell during the last word, history.

You can even use this general idea to describe what you did during the day.

For example: I woke up, went to school, watch TV and ate dinner.
