You learned about how Americans use rising intonation at the end of some sentences and following intonation at the end of other sentences.

But what about intonation within sentences?

In longer statements, statements that have more than one clause Americans often use both rising and falling intonation.

It's like a ball sports, tennis or basketball.
就像球类运动，网球或篮球。
The ball goes up and down.

The same motion is true in everyday speech.

Listen to this example: I want to play tennis, but I have to finish my homework first.

Notice that my intonation rises at the end of the first clause. "I want to play tennis."

And my intonation falls at the end of the second clause."But I have to finish my homework first."

Consider this example: If he studies hard, he will pass the test. If he studies hard, he will pass the test.

We also use this same general idea in sentences with introductory words.

For example: By the way, who told you that? By the way, who told you that?

Notice that my intonation rises after the introductory words, "By the way" and falls at the end of the main part of the sentence: "who told you that?"
