  四.托福写作话题之工作就业类话题范文:
  Topic:
agree or disagree: children should choose the similar jobs as their parents.
Three or four decades ago, it was common practice in China for children to take over the position of their retired parents. It was considered a privilege especially when the parents worked in profitable enterprises. But today, this has long gone obsolete as the population is expanding and competition in the job market is unprecedented. As to the question whether children should choose jobs as their parents do, I offer my personal opinion that they better not. The following is my reasons.
In the first place, our career choice should be based on personal interests and qualifications instead of family traditions. It is widely believed that an individual will perform the best when his job happens to be his interest. What has proved to be a correct choice for your parents is not necessarily a wise option for you. Take myself for an example. My father is a mechanic engineer and my mother is a retired worker in the same factory. They chose what they do partly because of their interest and passion and partly due to the limited education opportunities which were typical of their time. I, on the other hand, am lucky enough to have completed the higher education without any interruption and found my passion for teaching language. It is only natural that I should embark on teaching profession following my heart instead of my parents'.
In the second place, when we make career decisions, we should also consider what the market needs. And this may very well vary over time. There is typically a big periodical gap between the times the parents choose their jobs and the time for their children to do the same, two decades or even three decades. What were the most coveted jobs might have become unwanted positions within this period. For instance, when my parents were young, manufacturing was highly regarded professions but right now finance and information technology seem to be the hottest. In this case, I can't ignore the current market and blindly follow my parents.
Finally, we cannot deny the benefits inherent in following our parents' career path. This way we can always get firsthand experience and valuable advice from our parents or benefit directly from the relations they have in the industry. But overall I still believe that this may not be the most appropriate choice for everyone.
In light of all the evidence listed above, I am convinced that we should not unconditionally follow our parents' career choice and should take our own interest and the market trend into consideration.
