Mr Prosser thought it sounded perfectly potty.	普洛塞先生认为这听起来相当疯狂。
"That sounds perfectly reasonable," he said in a reassuring tone of voice, wondering who he was trying to reassure.	“听上去很有道理……”他以一种平静的语调说，却连自己要安抚的是谁都不知道。
"And if you want to pop off for a quick one yourself later on," said Ford, "we can always cover up for you in return."	“到时候如果你突然想离开的话，”福特说，“我们随时都会反过来再接替你的。”
"Thank you very much," said Mr Prosser who no longer knew how to play this at all, "thank you very much, yes, that's very kind ..." He frowned, then smiled, then tried to do both at once, failed, grasped hold of his fur hat and rolled it fitfully round the top of his head. "What?" said Mr Prosser.	“什么？”普洛塞先生问。
"Ah, I'm sorry," said Ford, "perhaps I hadn't made myself fully clear. Somebody's got to lie in front of the bulldozers haven't they? Or there won't be anything to stop them driving into Mr Dent's house will there?"	“噢，我很抱歉，”福特说，“也许我没能把自己的意思表达清楚。总得有人躺在推土机前面，不是吗？否则这里就没有什么能阻止他们开进邓特先生的房子了，不是吗？”
"What?" said Mr Prosser again.	“什么？”普洛塞先生再一次问道。
"It's very simple," said Ford, "my client, Mr Dent, says that he will stop lying here in the mud on the sole condition that you come and take over from him."	“很简单，”福特说，“我的委托人，邓特先生，表示他将停止躺在这里，只要你过来代替他。”
"What are you talking about?" said Arthur, but Ford nudged him with his shoe to be quiet.	“你在说些什么啊？”阿瑟问，但是福特踩了他一脚，示意他安静。
"You want me," said Mr Prosser, spelling out this new thought to himself, "to come and lie there ..."	“你希望我，”普洛塞说着，向自己表述了这个新想法，“过来躺下……”
"Yes."	“是的。”
"In front of the bulldozer?"	“在这些推土机前面？”
"Yes."	“是的。”
"Instead of Mr Dent."	“代替邓特先生？”
"Yes."	“是的。”
"In the mud."	“在泥浆里。”
"In, as you say it, the mud."	“是的，正如你所说，泥浆。”
As soon as Mr Prosser realized that he was substantially the loser after all, it was as if a weight lifted itself off his shoulders: this was more like the world as he knew it. He sighed.	普洛塞先生一旦意识到他最终还是输家，就仿佛从肩上卸下了千钧重担：毕竟这才更符合他所认识的世界。他叹了口气。
"In return for which you will take Mr Dent with you down to the pub?"	“你要真能把邓特先生带到酒吧去，想要什么回报呢？”
"That's it," said Ford. "That's it exactly."	“什么都不要，”福特说，“是的，什么都不要。”
Mr Prosser took a few nervous steps forward and stopped.	普洛塞先生紧张地朝前挪了儿步，又停下来。
"Promise?"	“你保证？”他问。
"Promise," said Ford. He turned to Arthur.	“我保证。”福特说，然后转向阿瑟。
"Come on," he said to him, "get up and let the man lie down."	“走，”他对阿瑟说，“起来吧，让这个家伙躺下来代替你。”
Arthur stood up, feeling as if he was in a dream.	阿瑟站起身，感觉仿佛是在梦里。
