Unit 1 The Donkey And The Pekinese
There was a merchant who had a Pekinese dog.
It was like a toy.
The Dekinese lived in the merchant's house,
slept on his bed, sat on his lap and lived an easy life.
The merchant also had a donkey.
It lived in a stable, slept on the floor and worked hard all day.
One day the donkey looked through a window into the house.
It saw the Pekinese sitting on its master's lap.
The dog stood up on its back legs and begged for food.
The merchant gave the dog some tasty biscuits.
'It's not fair,' the donkey thought. 'I work hard all day and get very little.
That silly little dog does nothing and lives an easy life.
I'm going to behave the same as that dog.'
The donkey pushed open the door of the house with its nose,and walked inside.
It tried to sit on the merchant's lap.
It tried to stand up on its back legs and beg for food.
The merchant picked up a big stick and began to beat the donkey.
'Get out of here, you stupid animal,' he shouted.
He drove the donkey back to the stable.
The donkey thought for a long time then said to itself,
'I've been a fool. I'm not the same as a Pekinese.My life is useful.
I have enough to eat and drink. I have a warm and dry stable to sleep in.
Why did I want to be like that stupid little dog?
I'm different from him.He's just a toy.
My master can live and do his work without the dog,
but he needs me to help him every day.'

John:And I don't want to be the same as you. You're rude and silly.
