Well, on the day before New Year's Day ...
You mean New Year's Eve?
Yes, on New Year's Eve,
in the evening,
we always have a big meal with all the family.
It is a very special meal.
Do you always eat at home?
Yes, always.
We never go out for our New Year's meal.
And what do you eat at this meal?
Oh, we eat many different things.
We usually have some soup
and we always have some dumplings
that have a little coin hidden inside.
This is a special tradition for New Year.
I see.
And we usually eat meatballs and chicken
and fish.
You know,
there is also a tradition about the fish.
Really?
Yes. You see, the Chinese word of "fish"
sounds like the word that means "extra food".
I see.
And so at the New Year's dinner,
families often put some fish
in the middle of the table-
but they usually don't eat it!
No?
No.They leave the fish and this means that
there are always some food left over
during the year to come.
I see. That's a nice idea.
And what else do you eat?
We eat special food called "Nian Gao".
It's delicious!
