1.refrain v.抑制，克制；避免
【例】Jack refrains himself from maddening in the public.
杰克克制自己不要在大家面前发狂。
【用】refrain常常和from搭配使用，表示“抑制、忍住做某事”。

2.compare v.比较；比作；比得上，相比
【记】词根记忆：com+par(平等)+e--看是否相等--比较
【例】The more important goal is using interactive learning to discover the cause of the decline and compare it to issues we face today-natural disasters，environmental problems，and war.
更为重要的目的是利用相互学习来发现下滑原因，并将其与我们如今面对的问题进行比较，如自然灾害、环境问题和战争。(1997)
compare to She compared him to a mountain and a tree in her letter.
她在信中要么把他比作高山，要么把他比作大树。
compare with Do you compare yourself with her?
你拿自己和她作比较了吗？
【用】compare后接to和with，若表达“与…作比较”，可互换，但 compare to还表示“将…比作…”，是比喻句。

3.agony n.．极度的痛苦：痛苦的;挣扎
【记】词根记忆：a+gon(角)+y--性格太过有棱角易遭受痛苦--极度的痛苦
【例】I hope that I can forget all the agony that has gone past.
我希望能忘掉过去的所有痛苦。
【辨】agony，suffering; agony指极度的、通常是不能忍受的痛苦；suffering强调实际忍受疼痛或痛苦的意思，如：He bore the sufferings bravely.

4.glitter n./vi.闪光；反光
【例】The diamond glitters in the sun.
钻石在阳光下闪闪发光。
【用】谚语：All that glitters is not gold．
发光的未必都是金子。

5.alert adj.警觉的：敏捷的，灵活的；留心的 n．警报 V．向…发出警报
【例】on the alert(for)Police warned the public to be on the alert for suspected terrorists.
警方提醒群众警惕可疑的恐怖分子。
【用】alert作形容词用时可单独使用，但作名词时一般都要和on连用，如on the alert( for)，表示“警惕着，对…保持戒备（状态）”。

6.complicate V．使复杂，变复杂
【记】词根记忆：com(全部)+plic(重叠)+ate(使)--使全部重叠--使复杂
【例】However, when we observe the language behaviour of which we regard as primitive cultures, we find it surprisingly complicates.
但是，当观察被我们看作原始文化的言语行为时，我们很惊讶地发现它非常复杂。(2002)
This problem was too complicated to say clearly.
这个问题太复杂了，说不清楚。
【用】常用词组：be complicated in（卷入…的麻烦中）。
【派】complicated( adj.结构复杂的；难懂的)

7.investigate V．调查，调查研究，审查
【例】The main purpose of the research is to investigate what people do at the weekend.
调查的主要目的是了解人们周末在做什么。（2005听力）
【派】investigation(n.调查，研究)；investigator(n．调查者，审阅者)
【辨】examine, Inspect investigate
三个词都含有“调查，审查”的意思。examine最常见，指进行比较正规的检查来弄清情况，后面接into或on，如：examine into a matter; inspect多指官方调查，仔细查看不足之处；investigate强调使用各种方式详尽、全面地检查。

8.vital adj.生命的，与生命有关的；紧要的，关系重大的；致命的：生气勃勃的
【记】词根记忆：vit(生命)+al--事关生命的--与生命有关的
【例】This vital change of physical position brought about considerable disadvantages.
身体姿势的重大变化带来了相当大的缺陷。(1999)
【用】vital后面常常接to或for表示“对…来说非常重要”，也可以说it is vital to do sth.。
【派】vitality(n.活力；生机，元气)
