本周,我们回答来自中国的维奥拉的提问,她写道:

我一直在关注您的节目,非常喜欢。

I desperately want to learn about the meaning of the word "ever," especially the differences between "ever" and "never." Thanks very much! - Viola, China

我特别想知道“ ever”一词的含义,尤其是“ever”和“never”之间的区别。非常感谢!-维奥拉,中国

Dear Viola,

亲爱的维奥拉,

Thanks for following our program.

感谢您关注我们的节目。

There are some simple rules that may help you learn how to use the words "ever" and "never."

有一些简单的规则或许可以帮助您学习如何使用单词“ever”和“never”。

"Ever" is an adverb, so it affects the meaning of a verb.

“Ever”是副词,因此会影响动词的意义。

The simple meaning of "ever" is "at least once."

“ever”的简单含义是“至少一次(at least once)”。

It can also mean, "at all times." Language experts tell us that "ever" only belongs in sentences with some negative quality.

“ever”也可指“一直,总是(at all times)”。语言专家告诉我们,“ever”只属于带有否定含义的句中。

For example, "She didn't ever call back". means the same as, "She did not call at all times."

例如,“她从未回电。”的含义与“她一直(at all times)没有打来电话”相同。

You will see "ever" in questions.

我们还会在疑问句中看到“ever”。

The question,

问句如:

"Have you ever seen the northern lights?"

“你见过北极光吗?”

means the same as "Have you seen the northern lights at least once?"

与“你至少看过一次(at least once)北极光吗?” 意思一样。

Where is the negative in that question?

这个问句的否定在哪里?

Grammar experts say that when you ask a question, there may be a negative answer.

语法专家称,人们提问时,可能会得到否定回答。

So "ever" is used in this kind of question.

因此,在此类问句中使用“ever”。

Ever can also express a doubt, as in:

“Ever”也可以表达不确定,例如:

If you ever see that man again, ask his name.

“如果你再见到那个男人,请询问他的名字。”

The speaker here is unsure about whether the listener will see the man again.

这里,说话者不确定听者是否会再次见到该名男子。

On the other hand, "never" already has a negative idea, so it belongs in sentences without any negative.

另一方面,“never”已经含有否定的意义,因此它存在于没有任何否定含义的句子中。

"Never" is also an adverb, and it means "not ever," or "not at any time."

“never”也是副词,表示“从不”或“任何时候都没有”。

I have never seen such a beautiful sky.

“我从未见过如此美丽的天空。”

Another difference is that you can use "never" as a one-word answer, while you cannot do so with "ever." For example:

另一个区别是,你可以用“never”作为单个单词的答复,而不能这样使用“ever”。 例如:

A: You copied my work.

A:“你抄袭了我的作品。”

B: Me? Never!

B:“我吗?绝不可能!”

And that's Ask a Teacher for this week.
