Hello, I'm Chris Barrow with the BBC News.
The World Health Organization says millions of children missed out on routine vaccinations last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. The WHO says 23 million young children did not receive jabs to protect them against diseases including measles, diphtheria and polio. Southeast Asia and the eastern Mediterranean are worst affected. The United Nations Children's Fund chief of immunization Ephrem Lemango said many of the unprotected children live in regions affected by conflict and crisis. "Most of these children that miss their first dose of vaccine live in communities affected by conflict and crisis, live in communities that are underserved, remote rural places, and they live in informal slum settings, particularly in urban poor areas."
A ministerial level meeting on Thursday of the World Trade Organization is being seen as crucial for the protection of rapidly declining fish stocks. The WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has warned that the health of the oceans and the planet is at stake. This report from Jonathan Josephs. UN figures suggest 1/3 of global stocks are over fished. If they're not made more sustainable, prices could rise as supply falls. These talks are targeting the subsidies and illegal fishing that are a large part of the problem. The head of the WTO is warning that despite increased governmental support for a deal, important divisions persist. A key sticking point is the fair treatment of developing economies who argue the livelihoods of their low income communities are at risk.
Doctors at a hospital in Sao Paulo treating the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have ruled out an emergency surgery for a possible intestinal obstruction. But Mr. Bolsonaro will remain in hospital for the time being. He's been suffering from a chronic case of hiccups for the last 10 days. Mr. Bolsonaro underwent surgery several times after being stabbed on the campaign trail 3 years ago. Here is Nicholas Rocha. He was stabbed in the abdomen when campaigning in 2018 and then he's undergone six or seven operations already. He's been suffering badly from the intestines, I believe, and also, he got COVID at one point last year. There have been several health issues affecting the president.
