The federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. throws out a federal regulation that was making owners of recreational drones and even flying toy airplanes register their devices with the Federal Aviation Administration, the very same agency that manages airlines and air traffic control.
The FAA announced such a rule in 2015 after noticing hobbyists were flying drones close to airports. More than a half-million were registered that first year but some people sued. The FAA said it was intended to enforce safety.
