Climate Classrooms Launched in China

School children in China will soon be able to get access to climate4classrooms.org, a website providing authoritative and up-to-date information on climate change issues in its Chinese version. Through the multilingual website, teachers and students will hopefully find innovative and interactive teaching tools based on the latest climate change data.

Chenxi has more.

Reporter:

The project of climate4classrooms in China is part of China-UK's joint efforts on education of climate change, it aims to offer teachers in China scientific knowledge about climate change and support their communication with their students. It will also help them understand how climate change is relevant to their lives as local and global citizens.

Joanna Burke is Culture Counsellor with the British Embassy in China.

"A cultural relation solution means removing barriers that prevent the global solution to climate change, by facilitating mutual understanding, development of shared values and trust. Clmate4classrooms can play an import role in this, building opportunities for education and dialogue, so the students can understand the challenges we face globally and work on local and global solutions with their peers from many other countires."

In the meantime, a UK-China Teacher Training Center for Climate Change Education has been opened to better help with education on climate change in China.
Cathy Sheng is the programme manager.

"Our target is to choose 500 schools in different cities. Currently, we have identified 10 cities plus Hong Kong because Hong Kong teachers are also very interested in the project. I think among them we can find representatives from local education authorities, head teachers and also science teachers. "

Sheng says teaching resources are specially designed to train those Chinese teachers so they can transmit their knowledge about climate change to the students in an interesting and accessible way, and form climate change education part of their everyday teaching.
