Hello from the CNN center here in Atlanta. I'm Melissa Long. It's Friday, October 24th. Here is a look at some of the stories happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Recession fears in Wall Street under slide this afternoon, the Dow's drop followed similar performances in world markets. Analysts say newly release turning was a port and GDP releases were part of this worldwide sell-off.
IN Iceland where the country wants an economic bounty is looking now to borrow up to two billion dollars. The International Monetary Fund the IMF and Iceland's PM announce they are nearing a deal today. The deal would include an economic stabilization program and access up to 2 billion dollars under a new two-year loan. Iceland stock market plunged early this month and the country nationalized three of the country's largest banks.
In energy market, a major oil production cut by OPEC isn't having a major market impact. Oil prices fell to a new year low today after OPEC's announcement it will cut oil output by one and a half million barrels a day. The organization is looking to stop the oil price slide. Currently oil is less than half of what it was just a few month ago.
A stay of execution, the controversial capital punishment case, Troy Davids sue is convicted of murdering, a @ police officer has been issued a stay of execution by the US's eleven's circuit court appeals. The stay is 25 days. Attorneys for David's sue now expect to file a new order with a lower court. They are arguing his execution would be a violation of the Eighth Amendment.
And more than 50 students at a high school near St. Louis may have been exposed to HIV. That's getting a lot of attention. Today on CNN.com the story is the Health Department says someone who wasn't infected told them this information. They won't say who the person is or how the teens may have been exposed. HIV tests are being offered now to the students and one student says many kids may wanna a transfer out.
