Newly-produced Chinese liquid milk have been found melamine free in the latest round of quality tests.
China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine made the announcement on Tuesday after it conducted a new round of milk quality checks on 58 domestic brands across the country's 22 major cities, including Beijing and Shanghai.
Meanwhile, Shijiazhuang Municipal governmental spokesman Wang Jianguo said on Tuesday that the local government had indeed neglected its duties, as it had failed to hold back the illegal contamination of Sanlu milk products. Wang Jianguo expressed a sincere apology to all citizens on behalf of the municipal government, especially to the parents of the sick babies.
"After serious introspection, and we have to admit that the government should be blamed in the Sanlu milk contamination case, as it is really a serious accident in food safety."
Wang Jianguo admitted that the local government had not made an immediate public announcement after learning of the contamination case, which had caused even greater losses and further deteriorated consumers' confidence in China's food safety both at home and abroad.
Milk quality testing has been going on throughout the country since media reported dairy products by Sanlu and other Chinese brands contained the industrial chemical melamine.
