Happy birthday to the World Wide Web. It’s been 10 years since the launch of Mosaic, the first browser to surf the Internet. But engineers say the Web is still far from achieving its full potential. Kristie Lou Stout has our report.

KRISTIE
Remember when the Web looked like this? Gray pages, low-rate graphics -- this is vintage cyberspace. Ten years have passed since we first surfed the World Wide Web. Back in 1993, Marc Andrison launched Mosaic, the world’s first Internet browser.

PINDAR WONG, PACKET CLEARING HOUSE
I remember sort of downloading it and running it on sort of X-Windows, which is what it was running. And so now it’s really great to see sort of parents and grandchildren and everyone using the Internet through sort of browser interfaces. It is a mass turn. But I think the game is changing.

KRISTIE
Changing because these days the Net is a much bigger beast Ñ it’s critical infrastructure that hosts governments, businesses and universities. Far reaching, but far from flawless. Jerky video and hour glass icons ------ little wonder why some call it the World Wide Wait. But one group is out to change that. Enter Internet2, a U.S.- led effort to create a better cyberspace.

Well the current Internet is not designed for the next-generation of applications. It’s really focused on tens of millions of dial-up users, not applications that really would change how we do teaching, learning and education.

KRISTIE
Like remote diagnosis for doctors, or the ability to send detailed medical files in a flash.

TED HANSS
The Internet2 backbone in the U.S. is at 10 billion bits per second, that’s 300,000 times faster than the connection you have at home.

KRISTIE
Champions of the project say Internet2 shows what the Net will do three to five years from now. But even a supped up cyberspace is susceptible to worms, viruses and just plain junk. And then there’s the millions of mobile devices and appliances that are moving online, requiring more IP addresses. Engineers are scrambling to surmount those challenges, taking heart from their recent achievement.

I would view the last 10 years as being a wonderful grand experiment. Many of us were just kids then, we’re still young at heart now. We were trying all these different things, periods of experimentation, we made a fair share of mistakes. The question is: What can we learn from those mistakes?

这一计划的拥护者说，INTERNET 2向我们展示了在未来的3-5年间网络将为我们带来什么，但是即使是再成熟的网络也会受到蠕虫、病毒和普通网络垃圾的影响。另外还有上百万在线使用的移动装置和设备，都要求有更多的IP地址。工程师们从最新成果中获得鼓舞，正在积极研究攻克这些难题。

在我看来，过去的十年就像是一个了不起的大试验。我们大多数人当时还只是孩子，我们的心态到现在依然年轻。我们尝试了所有这些不同的东西，经历了试验的各个阶段，我们也都犯过错误。问题是我们能从这些错误中学到什么？
