Chinese PM: Olympics Will Benefit Beijing for Long Time
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has the preparations for the Beijing Olympics would not only benefit the Games, but also benefit the whole city for a long time.
Wen Jiabao made the comment when visiting a neighborhood near western Beijing's Fengtai Sports Center, where the Olympic softball games will be held.
The premier chatted and played table tennis with local residents.
"Beijing's effort to develop infrastructure, to build venues, to protect the environment by saving energy, reducing emissions and greening the landscapes, will not only benefit the Olympic Games, but also create good environment for the sustainable development of the city, as well as improve people's living standards."
He said the Games are very short, but what would be left behind would last. He also promised that Beijing would remain as clean as it is now after the Olympics.
Early in the day, the premier visited the Beijing Olympic Basketball Gymnasium in the western part of the city.
China's men's national basketball team was training at the stadium. Wen Jiabao shook hands with the players and coaches, including NBA star Yao Ming, who has recovered from his left foot injury.
The Chinese team will play its first Olympic game against the United States on Aug. 10.
Wen Jiabao told all the players that what they needed was confidence and composure.
"I hope with your good performance you can win glory, dignity and friendship and display the true personality of Chinese."
Wen also met with volunteers who work at the stadium and encouraged them to carry out their duties in a careful and serious manner with a strong sense of responsibility.
