A suspected gas explosion killed several at a department store in Taichung on Thursday. More than two dozen people were injured.

This is why we have closed off the area to traffic and pedestrians. As there are many office and residential buildings nearby, I would like to ask everyone for their cooperation to keep everybody safe."

The fire department said the food court on the 12th floor was closed at the time due to construction work.

It added that the blast caused damage starting from the ninth floor.
