Why has conflict re-started between Israel and Hamas?

Israel declared a “state of war” on Saturday after Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise assault from the Gaza Strip.

The violence killed at least 70 Israelis, officials said, with hundreds seriously wounded. A massive wave of Israeli strikes on Gaza have since killed 198 and injured nearly 1,000 people, according to Palestinian officials.

The latest escalation comes after one man was killed and dozens more injured by Israeli Defence Forces on Wednesday during protests by Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza and is designated as a terrorist organisation by the UK and US. There has also been increasing unrest after ongoing IDF raids targeted at armed groups in the occupied West Bank.
