The big man stopped. He put the bucket down and looked into Cosette's face.
那个大个子男人停下了脚步。他放下水桶，审视珂赛特的脸。
'Why are you carrying a heavy bucket of water at this time of night? Who sent you?'

'Madame Thénardier.'
“德纳第夫人。”
'I would like to talk to this Madame Thénardier. Shall we go and see her?'

'Yes, Monsieur.'

Cosette was not afraid of the tree noises now.

This big man, with his gentle voice, was a new and wonderful thing in her life. They walked to the Thénardiers' house.
这个说话声音温柔的大个子男人，成了她生命中一件美好的新事物。他们走到德纳第夫妇的房子前。

The Thénardiers were very surprised to see Cosette's new friend, this big man in the old yellow coat.
见到珂赛特的新朋友，这个穿着黄色旧外套的大个子男人，德纳第夫妇非常吃惊。
Inside the house, the big man looked at Cosette.
进了屋子，这个大个子男人打量起珂赛特来。
He saw her thin clothes, her dirty hair, her big frightened eyes.
他看见她衣衫单薄，头发肮脏，一双惊恐的眼睛睁得大大的。
She was small for her eight years. Her hands were red from kitchen work, and she had no shoes.
她看起来比寻常八岁的孩子瘦小，双手因为一直在厨房里干活儿而变得通红，脚上连鞋子都没有。
