This is the Rachel's English 30-Day Phrasal Verb Challenge!

Learn 30 phrasal verbs in 30 days! Jumpstart your vocabulary in 2017. This is Day 8 and we're studying "hit" phrasal verbs.

Hit back. If you hit back at someone, you're responding to an attack with an attack. After the paper ran a false story on her, she hit back with a lawsuit.

If you hit somebody up, you're asking them for something. "Hey, can I hit you up for a dollar?" Or, "if you ever need anything, hit me up." That is, if you ever need anything, just ask.

What if you hit it off with someone? That means you get along really well right from the beginning. Luckily, I hit it off with my mother-in-law.

If you hit on someone, well, that means you're sexually interested in someone and want them to know it. I'm not sure, but I think that guy at the bar is hitting on me. It means, you don't think he was just talking to you for the sake of conversation. You think he was talking to you to let you know he was interested.

So that's if you hit on someone. But what if you hit on something? That is, to find something. I think you hit on the answer there. I think I hit on a solution to the problem.

Hit has the H consonant and the IH vowel, hi-, hi-. To make the IH vowel, the tongue tip stays down, but the front part of the tongue arches up towards the front of the roof of the mouth, ih, hi-. The jaw can drop just a little bit. Hi-. Then we have the T. you can make this a Stop T if the next word begins with a consonant, like in ‘hit back'. You hit me, I hit back. Hit back. So the air stops. There's not a T sound, there's an abrupt stop, no sound. Hit back, hit back. I just stop the air really quickly in my throat.

If the next word begins with a vowel or a diphthong, then you can make it a Flap T, like in ‘hit on'. That guy hit on me all night. Hit on, hit on, hiiiiiiiitoooooon. Just one quick flap against the roof of the mouth. Hit on.
