At the sight of the young woman, the Savage started, recoiled, turned pale.
野蛮人看见那女郎便吃了一惊，退缩了，苍白了脸。
The young woman stood, smiling at him–an uncertain, imploring, almost abject smile.
那女郎站在那儿对他微笑着——一种没有把握的、乞求的、差不多是低三下四的微笑。
The seconds passed. Her lips moved, she was saying something;
时间一秒秒过去。她的嘴唇动了，在说着什么。
but the sound of her voice was covered by the loud reiterated refrain of the sightseers.
但是语声被反复的高叫压倒了。
We–want–the whip! We–want–the whip!
我们——要——看——鞭子——功。
The young woman pressed both hands to her left side, and on that peach-bright,
妙龄女郎双手压在左边，那张蜜桃一样明艳、
doll-beautiful face of hers appeared a strangely incongrous expression of yearning distress.
玩偶一样美丽的脸上出现了一种渴望而痛苦的不和谐的表情。
Her blue eyes seemed to grow larger, brighter; and suddenly two tears rolled down her cheeks.
她那蓝色的眼睛似乎变得更大了，更明亮了。两颗泪珠突然滚下面颊。
Inaudibly, she spoke again; then, with a quick, impassioned gesture stretched out her arms towards the Savage, stepped forward.
她又说话了，仍然听不见。然后她突然做出一个急速的冲动的姿势，伸出了双臂，向着野蛮人走了过来。

And all of a sudden they had what they wanted.

"Strumpet!" The Savage had rushed at her like a madman. "Fitchew!"

Like a madman, he was slashing at her with his whip of small cords.

Terrified, she had turned to flee, had tripped and fallen in the heather.
她吓得魂不附体，转身便跑，绊了一下，摔倒在石南丛上。
"Henry, Henry!" she shouted. But her ruddy-faced companion had bolted out of harm's way behind the helicopter.
“亨利，亨利！”她大叫。但是她那容光焕发的同伴早已经逃离了危险，躲到直升机后面去了。
With a whoop of delighted excitement the line broke; there was a convergent stampede towards that magnetic centre of attraction.
人群又兴奋又快活，哇哇大叫。圈子散了，人们往磁力吸引的中。动乱跑。
Pain was a fascinating horror.
痛苦是一种迷人的恐怖。
"Fry, lechery, fry!" Frenzied, the Savage slashed again.
“惩罚，淫乱，惩罚！”野蛮人发了狂，又抽了一鞭。
Hungrily they gathered round, pushing and scrambling like swine about the trough.
人们迫不及待地围了过来，像猪锣围着食槽一样乱拱乱挤。
"Oh, the flesh!" The Savage ground his teeth.
“啊！肉欲！”野蛮人咬着牙，
This time it was on his shoulders that the whip descended. "Kill it, kill it!"
这一回鞭子落到了自己肩膀上。“杀死肉欲！杀死肉欲！”
Drawn by the fascination of the horror of pain and, from within, impelled by that habit of cooperation,
苦痛的恐怖吸引了人群，出于内心的需要受到合作习惯的驱使和团结补偿欲望的支配
that desire for unanimity and atonement, which their conditioning had so ineradicably implanted in them,
那是他们的条件设置埋藏在他们心里，无法抹去的,
they began to mime the frenzy of his gestures, striking at one another as the Savage struck at his own rebellious flesh,
他们也开始模仿起野蛮人的疯狂动作来，用野蛮人鞭打自己背叛的肉体的疯狂彼此殴打起来，
or at that plump incarnation of turpitude writhing in the heather at his feet.
或是殴打着他脚边石南丛中那丰腴的抽搐着的肉体——那堕落的体现。
