Hello, this is Jerry Smit.The family of George Floyd, who's murder in the US last year sparked worldwide protests against racism, has broadly welcomed the sentencing of the former police officer who killed him.The judge in Minneapolis handed down a 22.5 year prison term for Derek Chauvin.Nada Twafic reports.After the judge read out his decision, Mahalia Jones, Mr Floyd's aunt said the outcome was bittersweet, and she was clear about the difficult road ahead.I'm not gonna let this drag me down. I'm not gonna let it put me in a place of darkness.It just tells us as a black American, brown American, and even white people that we just have more work to do.The family and their lawyers told a crowd gathered outside the courthouse that they hoped this would be a turning point in America.The streets of Minneapolis have been calm. Activists say the fight for justice will continue.A day after the authorities in New South Wales ordered a lockdown for four areas of Sydney, they've extended the measure to the entire city and a number of surrounding areas.It follows a rise in cases in Australia's most popular city of the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19.Our correspondent Phil Mercer is there.This is the first lockdown here in Sydney since December of last year.And since that time, life was beginning to resemble what it was before the pandemic.But safe to say, this lockdown here in Sydney over the next 2 weeks will be a jolting reminder to Sydneysiders and Australians more broadly that the danger from COVID-19 and these new variant is far from over.
