Hello, I'm David Harper with the BBC News.President Biden has put gun control of the core of his new crime prevention strategy, announcing a policy of zero tolerance towards firearms dealers who do not run proper background checks. In a speech at the White House, he said the authorities will now take a tougher stance. If you willfully sell a gun to someone who is prohibited from possessing it, if you willfully fail to run a background check, if you willfully falsify a record, if you willfully fail to cooperate with the tracing request or inspections,my message to you is this: we'll find you, and we will seek your license to sell guns. We'll make sure you can't sell death and mayhem on our streets. The United Nations secretary-general has called on the Security Council to renew the mandate of the only international operation delivering humanitarian aid into northern Syria.Antonio Guterres urged member states to agree to keep the Bab al-Hawa crossing between Syria and Turkey open.Jessica McAllen reports. The United States and several other countries want the crossing to remain open, arguing that it's a vital supply line for up to 4 million people living in rebel-held areas of northern Syria.Russia, however, has previously indicated that it may not renew the border crossing's mandate.Last year, Moscow used its Security Council veto to reduce the number of crossings along the Turkish border from 4 to 1.The Russians argue that aid to these regions can be supplied by the Syrian capital Damascus.
