Hello, I'm Justine Greene with the BBC News.Republicans in the United States Senate have blocked a bill that would have led to a wide ranging debate on expanding voting rights across the country.Democrats failed to get the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation with Republicans arguing that it infringes states rights. Here is David Willis. The battle over voting rights in this country is being seen as the civil rights campaign of the era, if you like, and this bill in For the People Act would basically have ensured a number of different things. It would have protected voting rights in this country, and insured the integrity of elections. It would also reduced the amount that could be spent on political campaigns in this country, but they needed 10 votes from Republicans to the Democrats in order to advance this legislation that was not forthcoming.President Biden said the fight was far from over and that Democrats would be ramping up their efforts for democracy.Vice President Kamala Harris gave this response after the vote.It is clear, certainly, for the American people, that when we're talking about the right to vote it is not a Republican concern, or a Democratic concern, it is an American concern. This is about the American people's right to vote, unfettered. The issue here is their actual access to the voting process, or is that being impeded. The fight is not over.
