At exactly this time 75 years ago the US was battling to take control of the island of Iwo Jima.Almost 7,000 Americans lost their lives in more than a month of fighting there.In some ways their time has become our time.Bent over their sewing machines, our neighbors are making protective masks.The Red Cross volunteers of old would smile and the Victory Garden grandma planted to keep veggies on the table.They are making a comeback too.Our forebears survived the Great Depression and helped win a world war.I pledge allegiance.
