From NPR news in Washington, I'm Jack Spear.As Sunni militants expand their control of cities and oil facilities in Iraq's north,president Obama announced plans made to send up to 300 military advisers to help counter that insurgency.As NPR's David Welna reports,this will be the most significant US military presence in Iraq since all American forces were withdrawn from that nation two and a half years ago.Even as he announced the additional military advisers for Iraq,president Obama emphasized no American forces wound be returning to combat there.He says the US has increased intelligence and surveillance in Iraq."We will be prepared to take targeted and precise military actions if and when we determine that the situation on the ground requires this.If we do, I will consult closer with congress and leaders in Iraq and in the region."Obama also said he's sending secretary of state John Kerry to the region this weekend.He warned the US would not take military actions on behalf of any sect in Iraq,but added the US does have humanitarian, strategic and counter-terrorist interests to defend there.David Welna, NPR News Washington.California Republican Kevin McCarthy has been chosen as next House majority leader replacing Eric Cantorwho lost his primary race with little-known teaparty-backed candidate.In the election McCarthy GOP members in the house choosing the speaker John Boehnerfending off that challenge from the party's more conservative wing.The 49-year-old McCarthy has served as the GOP whip,the number three post in the republican-controlled house.
