From NPR News in Washington, I am Jack Speer.US government says it's now organizing shipments of emergency suppliesto help provide shelter to hundreds of thousands people displaced in the Philippines by the typhoon hit that country last week,shipments also include food and hygiene supplies.Philippine soldiers have been handing out food and water in some of the more devastated areasincluding the heavily damaged city of Tacloban.NPR's Tom Boman saysthe aircraft carrier the USS George Washington is being deployed to the hearted region.There are estimates as many as 10000 people have been killedand also roughly 600, 000 who have been left homeless.So the carrier arrives with its helicoptersand ability to carry food, water and medical equipment that can really help the situation like this.President of the Philippines has declared a state of national calamity there on for fast release of emergency funds to help victims.President Obama paid tribute to one of the oldest living veterans of World War 2 as he marked this veteran's day on international summitry.NPR's Scott Horsley reportsthe president also challenged the Americans not to forget a new generation of veterans returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.President Obama praised 107 year old Richard Overtonfor his service in the Pacific during world war 2 and for the way Overton continues to liveas Obama said proud and strong in the land he help keep free.As long running Afghan war winds downObama pledged the America will continue to support a new generation of military heroes.
