It's a first for the federal government..
Issuing voluntary guidelines to schools on protecting kids with food allergies.
Some of the steps include restricting nuts, shellfish or other foods that can cause allergic reaction,
making sure emergency allergy medicine such as EpiPens are available and training teachers or others how to use the medicines.
Dr.Wayne Giles, who oversaw the development of the advice for the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention: 88% of schools have one or more children with food allergies.
A recent CDC survey estimating that 1-in-20 children in the country have food allergies.
That's a 50% increase from the late 90's.
