A grand gathering celebrating the centenary of the Communist Party of China was held at Tian'anmen Square at the heart of Beijing on Thursday.

周四，中国共产党建党100周年庆祝大会在北京市中心的天安门广场举行。

【讲解】

the centenary of the Communist Party of China是中国共产党建党100周年；Tian'anmen Square是天安门广场。
中共中央总书记（general secretary of the CPC Central Committee）、中国国家主席、中央军委主席（chairman of the Central Military Commission）习近平抵达天安门城楼（Tian'anmen Rostrum）。
国务院总理李克强宣布仪式开始（announced the beginning of the ceremony）。
71架战鹰飞过天安门广场，组成“71”“100”字样（flew in the formation of "100"），代表党的百年历程。天安门广场鸣放100响礼炮（100-gun salute）。随后举行升国旗仪式（national flag-raising ceremony）。
大会上宣读了各民主党派、工商联（the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce）和无党派人士（personages without party affiliation）的联合致贺词（congratulatory message）。共青团员（the Chinese Communist Youth League members）和少先队（Young Pioneers）代表集体致献词。
中共中央总书记习近平在大会上发表重要讲话（important speech）。
以下是主要内容：
中国实现了第一个百年奋斗目标（realized the first centenary goal），在中华大地上全面建成了小康社会（building a moderately prosperous society in all respects），历史性地解决了绝对贫困问题（brought about a historic resolution to the problem of absolute poverty），正在意气风发向着全面建成社会主义现代化强国的第二个百年奋斗目标（the second centenary goal of building China into a great modern socialist country in all respects）迈进。
中国共产党一经诞生，就把为中国人民谋幸福、为中华民族谋复兴（seeking happiness for people and national rejuvenation）确立为自己的初心使命。一百年来，中国共产党团结带领中国人民（united and led the Chinese people）进行的一切奋斗、一切牺牲、一切创造，归结起来就是一个主题：实现中华民族伟大复兴（bringing about the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation）。
为了实现中华民族伟大复兴，中国共产党团结带领中国人民，浴血奋战、百折不挠（fighting bloody battles with unyielding determination），创造了新民主主义革命的伟大成就（achieving great success in the new-democratic revolution）。
为了实现中华民族伟大复兴，中国共产党团结带领中国人民，自力更生（a spirit of self-reliance）、发愤图强，创造了社会主义革命和建设的伟大成就（achieving great success in socialist revolution and construction）。
为了实现中华民族伟大复兴，中国共产党团结带领中国人民，解放思想、锐意进取（freeing the mind and forging ahead），创造了改革开放和社会主义现代化建设的伟大成就（achieving great success in reform, opening up, and socialist modernization）。
为了实现中华民族伟大复兴，中国共产党团结带领中国人民，自信自强、守正创新（a spirit of self-confidence, self-reliance, and innovation），统揽伟大斗争、伟大工程、伟大事业、伟大梦想（pursuing a great struggle, a great project, a great cause, and a great dream），创造了新时代中国特色社会主义的伟大成就（achieving great success for socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era）。
中国共产党和中国人民以英勇顽强的奋斗向世界庄严宣告，中国人民站起来了，中华民族任人宰割、饱受欺凌的时代一去不复返了（the time in which the Chinese nation could be bullied and abused by others was gone forever）！
只有社会主义才能救中国（only socialism could save China），只有中国特色社会主义才能发展中国（only socialism with Chinese characteristics could develop China）。
中国改革开放（reform and opening-up）是决定当代中国前途命运的关键一招，中国大踏步赶上了时代（China has caught up with the times）。
人民是历史的创造者，是真正的英雄（The people are the true heroes, for it is they who create history.）。
伟大建党精神是中国共产党的精神之源（The great founding spirit of the CPC is the Party's source of strength.）。
必须坚持中国共产党坚强领导（The firm leadership of the CPC must be upheld.）。办好中国的事情，关键在党。
必须团结带领中国人民不断为美好生活而奋斗（leading Chinese people toward a better life）。
必须继续推进马克思主义中国化（adapt Marxism to a Chinese context）。
必须坚持和发展中国特色社会主义（uphold and develop socialism with Chinese characteristics）。
必须加快国防和军队现代化（accelerate the modernization of national defense and the armed forces）。
把人民军队建设成为世界一流军队（elevate its armed forces to world-class standards），以更强大的能力、更可靠的手段（greater capacity and more reliable means）捍卫国家主权、安全、发展利益（safeguarding our national sovereignty, security and development interests）！
中国人民也绝不允许任何外来势力欺负、压迫、奴役我们。（Chinese people will never allow any foreign forces to bully, oppress or subjugate us.）
必须不断推动构建人类命运共同体（a human community with a shared future）。
必须进行具有许多新的历史特点的伟大斗争（a great struggle with many contemporary features）。
中国共产党和中国人民以英勇顽强的奋斗（through a tenacious struggle）向世界庄严宣告，中华民族迎来了从站起来、富起来到强起来的伟大飞跃，实现中华民族伟大复兴进入了不可逆转的历史进程（China's national rejuvenation has become a historical inevitability）！
形成海内外全体中华儿女心往一处想、劲往一处使的生动局面，汇聚起实现民族复兴（realizing national rejuvenation）的磅礴力量（mighty force）！
中国要全面准确贯彻“一国两制”（one country, two systems）、“港人治港”、“澳人治澳”、高度自治的方针。
解决台湾问题（resolving the Taiwan question）、实现祖国完全统一（realizing China's complete reunification），是中国共产党矢志不渝的历史任务（historic mission）。
新时代的中国青年要以实现中华民族伟大复兴为己任（carry on the mission of national rejuvenation）。
任何想把中国共产党同中国人民分割开来、对立起来（divide the Party from the Chinese people or to set the people against the Party）的企图，都是绝不会得逞的！
中国欢迎一切有益的建议（welcomes helpful suggestions）和善意的批评，但我们绝不接受“教师爷”般颐指气使的说教（will not accept sanctimonious preaching）！
