Hi John!
嗨,约翰!
Hi Faith! Where's Dr. Jill?
嗨,费斯!吉尔博士呢?
Her band is going on tour. They're playing shows all across the country.
她的乐队正在巡回演出。他们正在全国各地演出。
Touring must be so stressful--traveling, losing luggage...
巡回演出一定压力很大——旅行,丢行李……
Stress isn't always a bad thing.
压力并不总是一件坏事。
In fact, occasionally stress is healthy and normal--whether you are talking about life...or language.
事实上,偶尔有压力是健康和正常的——无论你是在谈论生活……还是语言。
I see where you are going!
我明白你的意思了!
In language, we say that stress is saying something in a louder or higher pitch.
在语言中,我们说重音是用更响亮或更高的音调说某事。
Right, and we often stress syllables.
没错,我们经常重读音节。
A syllable is any one of the parts into which a word is divided when it is spoken.
音节指的是单词在发音时被分成的任何一个部分。
A syllable generally has a vowel or a vowel and one or more consonant sounds.
一个音节通常有一个元音或一个元音和一个或多个辅音。
In words with two syllables, Americans often stress verbs and nouns in regular ways.
美国人在遇到有两个音节的单词时经常以规则的方式重读动词和名词。
Right! In two-syllable words, we often stress the first syllable in nouns and the second syllable in verbs.
没错!在双音节单词中,我们经常重读名词的第一个音节和动词的第二个音节。
For example, the noun produce.
例如,名词produce(农产品)。
The stress is on the first syllable - produce.
重音在第一个音节上——produce。
But the verb form is produce.
但是动词形式是produce(生产)。
The stress is on the second syllable - produce.
重音在第二个音节上——produce。
So, you might say "That country produces a lot of produce."
所以,你可以说“那个国家出产很多农产品。”
Right! Common nouns such as building, window, or garden all have stress on the first part of the word--they are all nouns with two syllables.
没错!常见的名词,如building(建筑物)、window(窗户)或garden(花园),重音都在单词的第一部分——它们都是有两个音节的名词。
But remember: the idea we are talking about today does not necessarily hold true for longer words--words with more than two syllables.
但请记住:我们今天讨论的内容并不一定适用于较长的单词——具有两个以上音节的单词。
John, earlier you suggested that stress is a bad thing.
约翰,之前你说压力是件坏事。
You're right--life without any kind of stress would not be very interesting...and language without any kind of stress wouldn't be interesting either.
你说得对——没有任何压力的生活不会很有趣……没有任何重读的语言也不会有趣。
And that's Everyday Grammar!
