Last year, consumers watched their grocery bills soar as the prices of different food items from eggs to butter climbed.

Don't expect that to change in 2023.

Consumers have been spending a lot more at the grocery store.

We have seen food prices spike over the last year, most notably eggs.

We're seeing that across the board though too with other food prices as well.

The USDA said in its outlook for 2023 that it expects food prices not to climb as high as they have been, but still climb higher.

So don't expect this shift in how much you're paying at the grocery store to go away anytime soon.

We mentioned eggs, which has gone up 60%, but other food prices have been hit pretty hard as well.

Butter, for example, the price for butter and margarine is up 35% compared to a year ago.

Lettuce is another example that's gone up 25%.

And then other foods, canned fruits and veggies have gone up 18%.

So we're seeing a lot of different food items jump up in price by double digit percentages.

So it's, it's not like a small uptick in what you're paying at the grocery store.

It's pretty significant.

It's not gonna be a quick fix.

It could take a while before we start to see some changes in prices.

And as inflation goes down, that's gonna help too.

But definitely through 2023, you're gonna pay more for food.

And then beyond that, it's gonna all depend on, you know, what the demand and supply is for all these items.

This is why we're seeing these concerns about a recession, because as food prices keep climbing, as layoffs continue to persist among different companies, you might see consumers pull back on how much they spend and that could potentially slow down the economy.

That's why we're seeing so many experts raise concerns that we might enter a recession this year.
